Stopping the Zombies

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

"Brains....Brains". Zombies storming towards my home hungry for my brains. The only way to survive, rely on some corn, peas and squash. "Plants vs Zombies", a fun game that can drain your phone or tablet fast.

Here's the gist...The only way to protect your brain is by planting vegetables that are armed with super powers. If you plant corn, the corn will throw kernels and butter to kill the zombies. If you plant peas, the peas will shoot pea pellets to kill the zombies. The more vegetables you plant, the more protected you are from the zombies getting into your house and eating your brains.

How does this apply to our everyday life with Christ? The Bible says Satan goes around like a roaring lion looking for who he can devour (1 Peter 5:8). He attacks us, not with physical weapons, but mental weapons. He shoots arrows at us filled with seeds of doubt, fear, confusion, anger, lust, despair and so on and so on. He does this so he can take our minds captive, therein taking control of our heart and the decisions we make.

The seeds we choose to meditate on will produce our feelings and reactions. Let's be honest, how many of us have replayed fights, conversations or past sins in our mind – or dream up fears the bills won't get paid and our deepest desires and dreams will never come true? What normally happens when we do this? We get upset, mad, frustrated and break down into a bawling mess, crying uncontrollably because of the scenario we allowed to take root in our mind (please tell me I am not the only one who has done this).

Focusing our time and thoughts on a certain topic is a form of meditation. When we think and meditate on the deceitful seeds that Satan attacks us with, we allow him to plant those seeds into our mind and heart. This gives Satan a foothold in our life, and as scripture commands, “Do not give the devil a foothold,” Ephesians 4:27.

But here's the great part, Jesus tells us exactly how to fight against these deceitful seeds. All we have to do is meditate on his word. He wants us to plant the scriptures in our heart that confirm His love, His promises, His protection and His authority. He wants us to meditate on His words and his goodness, because when we do, we will produce seeds of joy, peace, trust and all the other amazing blessings he died for us to have. That's why it's so important to spend time with him daily, meditating on just a couple of scriptures at a time, so we can seek out every hidden treasure God wants to reveal.

Just as in the computer game – the only way to protect our brains (mind) from the zombies (Satan) is to plant powerful weapons (God's word) in our heart, and the more we plant the stronger we become.

“He replied, 'Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.” Matthew 15:13

“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45

“The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:6
